Here’s the truth: a lot of companies make crap products. Logitech don’t.

Moving their brand away from being a manufacturer of reliable ‘budget’ products and into the arena of the technology heavyweights has been a steady and gradual process for the Swiss company, and one that seems to finally be paying dividends. But was the Logitech S125i (released in 2009) a sign of things to come or a hangover from the bad old days? We dispatched our reviewer to find out.

Introduction

This is a tiny dock that employs a funky dual speaker design. With a look that recalls the old style ‘ghetto blasters’, but does so with a cheeky sense of bubblegum fun, the Logitech S125i has a winning design and is almost cute.

This dock looks like it would be perfect for teenyboppers (if they still had teenyboppers), fans of contemporary pop and the sort of people who take ‘X Factor’ seriously. In fact, it could almost pass for a karaoke machine. Now, I won’t hold any of that against the little guy, as, despite being tiny and clearly quite kid-friendly, the S125i does pack a punch. The twin speakers are actually pretty beefy and the ‘Bass’ button is a very welcome feature indeed.

The Logitech S125i also comes with an option to connect to a laptop or computer and plays all versions of iPod except Gen III. The dock itself is petite and travel friendly, yet also quite sturdy.

At £35, this probably isn’t a dock to buy for yourself. This dock isn’t going to replace the HiFi or compete with the superdock you bought for £60-100. It is, however, going to make a very welcome Christmas or birthday present for any sons, daughters, nieces or nephews you happen to have. Its combination of user-friendly, fun design, high quality audio output and low price make it perfect for younger users.

Hardware / Design

Once again, don’t buy this product if you want to play cool jazz from your kitchen, as you impress friends with your sophisticated brand of dry repartee over brandy and espressos. It lacks the power, it lacks the polish and it lacks the trendy design needed for such application. The Logitech S125i does, however, give off a surprisingly rich sound for such a cheap model and is enough to fill a small room without being particularly intrusive.

The lack of a remote control is a bit of a let down, as is the exclusion of the cables needed to connect this dock to a computer. I’m in two minds about this, however, as on the one hand it keeps the price down, but on the other hand it does involve an extra purchase.

The Logitech S125i is very light, very portable and fairly tough, meaning that it can be taken with you almost anywhere you want to go and still serve you well.

There are 42 Amazon.co.uk reviews for this product, 27 of which give a perfect 5/5 score, 12 of which give a good 4/5 score and only a paltry 3 give 3/5 reviews. There are none lower than that.

On the more critical side, ‘R. G Williams’ (3/5) said that the S125i was “bland” and “not very sexy” (which, I feel, misses the point somewhat). He also noted that the speakers were a far cry from perfect. He ended the review, however, by saying, “for the price, its hard to beat”. My sentiment’s exactly.

‘Macca’ (3/5) called the product a “mixed bag” and saying that the ‘Bass Boost’ button was “redundant”. He said that the speaker was “ideal for a child” but cautioned against expecting “unrealistic performance from such a small, low cost unit”

On the other hand, a review by ‘Shaolin Monkey’ (5/5) calls the Logitech S125i “small but perfect”, saying that “It's never going to set the world on fire, but it's perfect for when you're stuck for tunes while doing the dishes or, like I'm doing now, listening to music while at my desk PC”. Similarly, ‘Nicey’ (5/5) said that the speakers were “great around the house or on holiday” highlighting how travel friendly these speakers really are. ‘Fidget99’ (5/5) praised the S125i as “great value for money”.

Elsewhere, ‘Mr. R.C Sparling (5/5) singled the sound reproduction out for praise, saying, “I do not know how such a 'Bassy' tone can come from such a small unit” and ending his gushing review with a simple “Well done Logitech. Its Stunning”.

Conclusion:

This is a lovely speaker dock that really highlights the versatility of Logitech. When other companies are churning out featureless, generic speakers, Logitech are aiming them at specific price ranges and demographics.

The S125i itself is well-made, high performance (for the price) and a bloody bargain to boot. If you’re looking for a gift to satisfy the kid who has everything, this would be a respectable choice.
